25 Years On: Tyvek® Membrane Proves Its Endurance in Berkshire Roof Renovation
In a compelling demonstration of material resilience, a recent renovation project in Berkshire has spotlighted the long-term performance of Tyvek® 2001B Pro, a roofing membrane installed in 1998. The membrane, installed free-spanning over counter battens and sarking boards beneath natural slate, has successfully endured over 25 years of everything the British weather could throw at it – offering architects and roofers a rare and welcome glimpse into real-world aging of roofing underlays. Natural slate presents a rigorous test for any underlay. Heat transfer across the batten void can compromise the functional layer responsible for moisture management and wind resistance. Yet, Tyvek® 2001B Pro, with its unique 170- micron functional layer, has stood the test of time and continues to perform.
Tyvek® Performance After 25 Years
Testing conducted in collaboration with Ascot Designs revealed exceptional aged performance results:
• Nail tear resistance: 97% of original strength
• Tensile strength: 88% retention
• Water column: 1.7m (surpassing the 1m of new air-open membranes)
These figures confirm that Tyvek® membranes not only meet but exceed expectations for long-term durability, maintaining critical moisture resistance and structural integrity decades after installation.
Tyvek® Continues to Offer New Solutions Through Innovation
Tyvek’s roofing portfolio has continued to evolve:
• The original Tyvek® HD Plus was designed for unsupported use in pitched roofs.
• In 1996, Tyvek® 2001B Pro introduced improved bonding between the Tyvek® layer and Typar laminate.
• By 1998/99, Tyvek® Supro was launched with a soft structure Tyvek® layer and polypropylene fleece – the benchmark in pitched roof underlay technology and offers unrestricted compliance with the wind uplift requirements contained within BS5534:2014 + A2 2018
Why It Matters
For specifiers, contractors, and architects, this case study offers more than just numbers – it’s a testament to the reliability of Tyvek® membranes in real-world conditions. Whether designing new builds or renovating heritage properties, choosing materials with proven longevity can make all the difference.
