Our military personnel know that flash fires are an ever-present hazard and seconds can make all the difference between life and death. DuPont answers the call with Nomex® fiber.
DuPont understands that an already tough situation can flare up in a heartbeat, so we help keep soldiers safe from flash fires with Nomex® brand fiber. Proven in emergency response and in industrial situations, Nomex® fiber is inherently flame-resistant, so the protection won’t wash or wear out. It won’t melt, drip, or support combustion in the air, helping give warfighters the confidence it takes to focus on the mission.
For over 200 years, we’ve worked with the U.S. military and pioneered modern flame-resistance technology to keep up with changing times and conditions. Our scientists and engineers continue to research, innovate, and test new technologies, too. We know that military personnel face a range of low, medium and high threats, so we offer materials that can be further processed to help deliver a range of performance attributes, including protection level, durability, comfort, and aesthetics.
Solutions for all branches of the military
Many innovative solutions are in the field right now, like the Multi-Climate Protection System made with Nomex® fiber helps offer excellent thermal protection in harsh weather conditions, the Army Aircraft Crew Uniform, the Flame-Resistant Army Combat Uniform (FRACU) and the Combat Vehicle Crewman Uniforms for enhanced protection.
Extreme testing survivability
To help Nomex® fiber address the extreme requirements of Air Force flight suits, our scientists pioneered a laboratory simulation of flash fire conditions. The DuPontTM Thermo-Man® testing unit lets our technicians study the results of flash fire burns on a range of materials. The data obtained with 122 heat sensors helps us calculate and predict the location and percentage of second- and third-degree burns that military personnel may experience in a flash fire situation. With this unique knowledge, we’re able to create and test new technologies to help provide superior protection.
Fire Resistant Environmental Ensemble (FREE)
Created by the Army in 2007, FREE is a layered clothing system designed to protect the wearer from the effects of flame threats while serving in adverse weather conditions like the ones found in Afghanistan. Each component is designed to be compatible with the latest personal protective apparel and incorporate FR technologies, like Nomex® fiber, to help increase protection from flash fires. The warfighter is protected, comfortable, dry, and warm across a broad climate range.
Whatever the uniform, whatever the job, military clothing made with Nomex® fiber from DuPont helps protect the heroes who protect our way of life.
