DuPont™ Nomex® provides electric arc flash protection for electricians, utility

Nomex® for Utilities

Nomex® for Utility

Utility workers come in contact with hazards such as flash fires and electrical arcs. Nomex® offers protection to improve their safety.

Flash fire protection

Flame-resistant garments made of DuPont™ Nomex® fibre can play a key role in helping to provide the life-saving seconds people need to escape a flash fire. Nomex® fibre is inherently flame-resistant, so it’s suitable for utility applications such as gas distribution networks, power plants, and electricity providers.

Nomex® thermal technology manages the high heat of fire, yet still delivers remarkable lightness: flame-resistant garments made of Nomex® are breathable and comfortable.

Arc flash protection

An electric arc is a continuous electric discharge of high current between conductors, generating very bright light and intensive heat. The arc blast presents a very serious hazard (potentially fatal) because of the risk of severe burn injuries caused by intensive heat and molten metal splashes.

By providing garments made of Nomex® fibre, companies can effectively protect their employees against this hazard. DuPont tests the performance of their workwear fabrics when exposed to electric arcs by using the DuPont™ Arc-Man® test.

INFORMATION & IDEAS

  • Cut Test Methods – by the Numbers

When it comes to specifying protective gloves, there are many things to consider.

  • Nomex® & Thermal Protection Performance Test

The Thermal Protection Performance Test measures the thermal protection level of a fabric.

  • Nomex® Garment Weight Benefits

Typical protective fabrics made of Nomex® fibres can be up to 40% lighter than cotton and cotton-blended fabrics which were treated with flame-retardant chemicals.

  • Cost Effectiveness of Nomex®

DuPont™ Nomex® fibre is a highly cost-effective solution in terms of cost per wear thanks to its exceptional durability.

  • Nomex® Moisture Management Benefits

Fabrics and garments made of DuPont™ Nomex® help enable light-weight solutions with excellent moisture management.

  • Electric Static Discharge Protection Nomex®

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can lead to the generation of sparks with energy levels sufficient to ignite possible surrounding vapours, aerosols of flammable liquids or dust particles, leading to an explosion.

  • Electric Arc Protection - Nomex®

In order to choose adequate protective clothing, the potential incident heat energy (in units of energy per surface area) caused by an electric arc and to which a worker may be exposed, needs to be calculated in a thorough risk assessment.

  • CE Regulations for Nomex® PPE

CE marks, norms and regulations are important criteria when choosing Personal Protective Equipment.

  • Protecting Nomex® Production

The DuPont™ Nomex® Partner Program is a carefully-selected network of customer-oriented and progressive weavers and garment manufacturers in Europe who adhere to the rigorous quality controls of DuPont for their fabrics and garments. A unique label on the garment aids identification and provides customers in Europe with a quality mark from reputable suppliers who offer genuine products with Nomex®.

  • Chemical Splash Protection Nomex®

Chemical hazards can occur in conjunction with thermal hazards, such as accidental splashes of chemical products onto protective clothing, or through leakages of chemical products.

  • Nomex® Label Program

The DuPont™ Nomex® Label Program assists European customers in identification and providing a quality mark from reputable suppliers they can trust to offer products with Nomex®.
