Chemical Protection for Military and Police

Providing Chemical Protection for our Protectors

Many military and police scenarios call for effective chemical protection – and DuPont provides it with its Tychem®, Tyvek® and Nomex® brands.

Our protective garment solutions are tailored to a host of different hazards, and help offer a range of chemical protection for military and police in situations such as initial entry, victim rescue, release mitigation, evidence collection, body removal and site clean-up.

Broadly speaking, there are two main types of suits: gas tight and gas permeable. Gas tight suits rely on an impermeable barrier to protect the wearer from hazards, whereas gas permeable suits are breathable, allowing body moisture to circulate through the garment. DuPont is dedicated to helping protect against CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) risks and has specially developed Tyvek® and Tychem® coveralls as well as Nomex® solutions for a high level of protection.

DuPont™Tyvek®

Tyvek® coveralls help provide the protection, durability and comfort that personnel exposed to hazardous dry particles, aerosols, and light liquid splashes need to focus on the task at hand. Due to their high performance particulate barrier and their extremely low-linting and contaminant-free nature, garments made of Tyvek® are particularly well suited to forensics and to protect scenes of crime from contamination by the wearer, the suit or cross-contamination.

DuPont™Tychem®

Garments made of Tychem® are made of high-tech barrier fabrics tested against a broad range of hazardous substances that help determine permeation performance, which is critical for fabrics that are exposed to hazardous chemicals. DuPont has specially developed the fabric to help protect emergency response teams and first responders from hazardous liquids, vapours, gases and particulates. These tough, lightweight garments are tear- and abrasion-resistant, maintaining the protection of the application because the barrier remains intact. A range of solutions is available, depending on the threat and level of protection required. Tychem® F suits are specifically developed for protection against toxic chemicals, corrosive liquids and military warfare agents.

DuPont™ Nomex®

Nomex® is used in conjunction with other fabrics to help provide air-permeable protective suits designed to be more comfortable for the wearer whilst still helping to protect against thermal and CBRN risks. DuPont recently developed a new technology platform available under Nomex® LS that allows the Nomex® fabrics to become lighter and stronger, with a particular focus on combined improvements in abrasion and tear strength. The introduction of Nomex® LS light fabrics constitutes a new level in both wearability and protection.

CASE STUDIES

INFORMATION & IDEAS

  • Nomex® Garment Weight Benefits

Typical protective fabrics made of Nomex® fibres can be up to 40% lighter than cotton and cotton-blended fabrics which were treated with flame-retardant chemicals.

  • Cost Effectiveness of Nomex®

DuPont™ Nomex® fibre is a highly cost-effective solution in terms of cost per wear thanks to its exceptional durability.

  • Nomex® Moisture Management Benefits

Fabrics and garments made of DuPont™ Nomex® help enable light-weight solutions with excellent moisture management.

  • Electric Static Discharge Protection Nomex®

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can lead to the generation of sparks with energy levels sufficient to ignite possible surrounding vapours, aerosols of flammable liquids or dust particles, leading to an explosion.

  • Chemical Splash Protection Nomex®

Chemical hazards can occur in conjunction with thermal hazards, such as accidental splashes of chemical products onto protective clothing, or through leakages of chemical products.
