Professor Tytonius Demonstrates the Protective Powers of DuPont™ Tyvek®

DuPont introduces Professor Victor Tytonius, the cyber scientist who specialises in worker protection and chemical protective clothing and materials.

In a series of videos Professor Tytonius carries out scientific experiments to reveal the performance of three non-woven structures – Tyvek®, MPF (Microporous Film) and SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond). This new, unique and engaging digital animation that takes science and turns it into a fun, interesting yet educational topic can also serve as a useful tool for specifiers as they select their protective clothing and for the wearers themselves to help them understand how they are being protected and also to accept their coveralls.

The Tyvek® story
Split into several chapters and designed to be told over a period of time, the story develops to explain and enhance the major differences between Tyvek®, Microporous films (MPF) and SMS materials.

Chapter 3

Chapter 1 explains that since the creation of Tyvek® in 1955, there is now an array of similar materials available; the most well-known of these being MPF and SMS. From his impressive laboratory, Professor Tytonius clearly demonstrates that the three fabrics’ physical properties are not alike and that they provide very different levels of protection and comfort.

In Chapter 2 the Professor investigates the main structure of these different materials by putting them under the microscope and tests the effectiveness of the barrier the material is expected to provide. The experiments reveal the different performances in a laboratory and help to understand the consequences in a real-life working environment.

In Chapter 3, Professor Tytonius reveals some hard scientific evidence about the chemical protection properties of the different structures. He carries out experiments to test the garments for penetration and permeation according to harmonised standards and explains the results as they are revealed.

In Chapter 4, Professor Tytonius discovers how well the three types of chemical protective fabrics continue to perform after abrasion. These experiments reveal that performance on new and lightly abraded fabric can be very different, simulating "protection in use" and what can happen during real use conditions if the task at hand abrades the garment.

Through this innovative and humorous presentation, the animation delivers the important scientific message that if you want to have the very best protection that can stand up to the task at hand, you should invest in the very best coveralls available. Professor Tytonius escorts his viewers on a journey that outlines the range of evidence that underlines the difference of the Tyvek® material.
