Tyvek® for Cargo Covers

From a chance observation of polyethylene “fluff” at a DuPont™ laboratory in 1955, DuPont™ Tyvek® was born. For over 40 years, DuPont™ Tyvek® has been the world leader in the application of flash spinning technology to the protection of people, property and the environment. DuPont™ Tyvek® has long been known for its remarkable lightweight strength and its ability to function as a barrier to liquids, particles and microbes while allowing gases and vapors to permeate. Now this unique material is being used to protect precious cargo – such as medicine and food.

Described below, are a few of the properties of Tyvek® that make it an ideal material for air cargo covers.

 

 

Lightweight Strength

Have you ever tried to tear a Tyvek® envelope? Bet you can’t do it. The unique flash spun sheet structure produced by our proprietary flash spinning process is difficult to tear and puncture, while being 2 to 10 times lighter than typical competitive products1.

Breathable Barrier

Tyvek® can hold back water while allowing gases and vapor to permeate through the sheet structure. Hard to believe? Watch the video to the left.

Lower Thermal Conductivity

Tyvek® is composed of high density polyethylene , a low thermal conductivity polymer, and contains no fillers or pigments. The unique web-like sheet structure (above left) creates void spaces in the polyethylene web. Air “trapped” in these void spaces, further reduces the thermal conductivity of the sheet.

High Reflectance & Low Emissivity2
